. happening now. another top commander in a widening scandal swirling around general david petraeus. john allen is now the subject of a pentagon investigation. it centers around hundreds, possibly thousands of e-mails sent to this woman. details of where she fits into an increasingly tangled web of relationships. i'll talk about all of this with the chair of the senate intelligence committee. dianne feinstein says it is like something off the front page of a tab roid mloid magazine and s demanding answers. i'm wolf blitzer and you're in "the situation room." >>> we begin with stunning twists in the scandal that brought down the head of the cia, general david petraeus. another u.s. general is caught in the same tangled web. john allen, top commander in afghanistan, is being investigated by the pentagon for allegedly sending inappropriate e-mails to a married woman, the same woman whose complaint of threatening e-mails from general petraeus' lover cracked the scandal wide open. barbara starr is trying to sort this out for us. it is rather complicated, what's the latest you're getting? >> it
broadwell, the former mistress of david petraeus. this is after investigators found substantial classified information on her computer and the glare being question, did broadwell's relationship with david petraeus give her access to these classified documents? "outfront" tonight, cnn national security contributor, fran townsend. she's also a member of the cia external add voizry committee and knowed a lot about what it means to have top clearance. the name of the fbi agent, frederick humphries, who was by the way, involved in foiling a terrorist attack in 1999. very accomplished fbi agent. what do you know about the relationship? >> it's interesting. apparently, i understand from a senior law enforcement official that humphries and jill kelley met when she attended the citizens academy. this is a sort of familiarization program that the fbi runs across the country in communities to familiarize people and sort of get them to understand the work of the fbi in their community so it's part of the see something, say something. this is another mean of the fbi reaching out in local communities. j
-mails they came upon david petraeus. let's stop it here and bring in suzanne -- suzanne kelly in washington, our intelligence correspondent. suzanne, a lot of ground to cover here. we have this video that has surfaced of paula broadwell, last month, speaking at the university of denver and she's speaking here as david petraeus' biographer about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. let's take a listen. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the cia an annex had taken a couple prisoner and they think the attack on the consulate was an attempt to get the prisoners back. that's still being vetted. >> where did she hear that? did it come from david petraeus and do we know if her claim was true, the cia was holding captives inside a consular annex in benghazi? >> right, ted. this raises serious issues. she clearly said in the video the information she was sharing on libya and the cia holding prisoners there hadn't been vetted. so that means she is sharing something with -- that she heard with a public audience. that's concerning because they have to ask, what is your so
the republican house majority leader may have known about former cia director david petraeus' extramarital affair before the president did. that's according to aides to congressman eric cantor who tell us he found out from an fbi employee concerned that national security might have been breached as a result of the affair. cantor was told on october 27th. president obama didn't find out about the affair until after election day. congressional leaders from both parties are upset that neither they nor the president were informed until late last week. >> obviously this was a matter involving a potential compromise of security. and the president should have been told about it at the earliest date. >> reporter: a u.s. official said there was no breach of security as a result of the affair. a cantor aide says the congressman called the fbi's leadership to report the information he got on october 31st. but according to "the wall street journal," the fbi's probe had already been under way for months. "the journal" says the fbi's investigation began in may when it started looking into e-mails described as
.i.a., retired general david petraeus. now general allen's nomination to be supreme allied commander of nato is on hold. two of the top military men of their generation have been brought low by their acquaintance with jill kelley, a tampa socialite seen here at her home with the story playing on the t.v. behind her. last spring, kelley complained to the f.b.i. of receiving harassing anonymous e-mails. turned out, those e-mails had been written by a jealous paula broadwell. the investigation then exposed broadwell's affair with c.i.a. director david petraeus. then the f.b.i. found an e-mail trail linking kelley to general allen. and tonight bob orr picks up the story for us from there. bob? >> reporter: good evening, scott, well, the announcement came in the middle of the night on board an airplane carrying secretary of defense leon panetta to australia. pentagon spokesman george little told reporters secretary panetta asked the white house to postpone general allen's appointment as supreme allied commander in europe. >> on sunday the federal bureau of investigation referred to the department

department did. that's the kind of question they're going to ask david petraeus. but here is the problem with bengha benghazi. it was a huge cia base. and what were they doing down there? were they simply buying up arms off the local market, surface to air missiles? even some are arguing that this attack on september 11th had something to do with an arms deal that went bad and there are rumor that is possibly this cia unit or somebody down there was buy i buying arms to send to syria. i frankly discount them all. i see no evidence of it. somebody has to give us the answers. this is why this controversy is carried on so long because there's absolutely no clarity. we, as americans, want to know why four american diplomats were killed. >> let's specifically -- there is word that the people on the ground in benghazi, libya, cried out for help and help did not come. >> i think it's clear that the ambassador, who was murdered, did express doubts to washington about the security. there was no backup. the problem is, if there was a seven-hour gun battle for that consulate, that's not fast enough
breaking news. we're getting new information about what then-cia director david petraeus knew about the benghazi attack and when he knew it. let's get right to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. barbara, what are you learning? >> wolf, i have just spoken to someone, a long-standing source who has spoken to david petraeus. this is someone on his level professionally. this person is directly familiar from petraeus with his thinking, with petraeus' thinking about what he will tell congress tomorrow about the benghazi attacks. david petraeus wants to tell congress that he knew almost immediately after the september 11th attacks that the group ansar al sharia, that al qaeda sympathizing group in libya was responsible for the attacks. here's how it goes. in petraeus' view there are two questions on the table. who was responsible? and that is ansar al sharia. he has intelligence he believes to back that up. second question, what was their motivation? that is where some of the confusion may lie. what this source says petraeus told him is there were about 20 intelligence reports that
with new details on the scandal that led to the resignation of cia director general david petraeus. >> the woman who wrote the biography was sending harassing emails to another woman close to the cia director that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. more details are coming out about the timeline of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. the fbi informed the director of national intelligence james clapper about the investigation on tuesday night, election night. just as some polls were beginning to close. that director clapper as a friend, colleague, fellow officer and admirer urged petraeus to step down from his position. we know as well from that intelligence source that director clapper informed the white house about the investigation on wednesday and then on thursday the director and -- the questions now, of course, will focus on this second woman. who was she? what was the nature of her rela
